Using reenactments, clips from historical films, and abundant archival material (photos, prints, paintings), the program faithfully depicts events of January–May 1871, explaining why the Commune arose and how the movement was suppressed in blood.
Bismarck is triumphant in the Franco-Prussian War. The empire of Napoleon III is no more. France’s new president, headquartered at Versailles, accepts humiliating peace terms. Prussian troops occupy Paris in a symbolic gesture then withdraw. Against this backdrop, a mix of Paris radicals and reformers (the Communards) declare for self rule and barricade the city. Versailles troops attack and put down the insurrection leaving thousands dead and the city partially burned.
