THE PLACES IN BETWEEN

After an initial prereading lesson that focuses on Islam, Asia, and Afghanistan’s history and geography, nine subsequent lessons have students delve into topics such as the nature of nonfiction, the region’s peoples and cultures, Tajik villages, cultural antiquities of Afghanistan, traveling among the Hazara, police brutality in Bamiyan, Islam and religious tolerance, Babur and other historical references, and gender roles in Afghanistan. Lessons emphasize textual evidence, inferences, theme analysis, point of view, and structure. The unit concludes with a final discussion and project focusing on the importance of religion in the book. Bibliography. 76 pages. ©2017.
