Students engage in analysis of 16 case studies of difficult decisions that presidents have had to make, learning along the way that while presidents strive to make the "right" decision, the final call is often influenced by political, economic, and regional considerations.
An introduction shows students how to do case analysis; each case study then includes a brief reading followed by discussion questions. Among the cases: Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase, Lincoln and Fort Sumter, Wilson and the League of Nations, Truman and the atomic bomb, and Carter and the hostage crisis.
