Student groups representing two competing railroad companies race to complete their tracks, as they research America's transportation history and complete activities such as writing newspaper articles, giving a presentation on Morse code, and reenacting the "golden spike" ceremony at Promontory Point.
During team competition, students answer questions from their research, gaining points that move them forward along their routes. The teacher’s guide includes complete instructions, pre- and posttests, handouts, and a timeline. Nearly all of the associated projects can stand alone; completing all four phases of the simulation requires 10 class periods.
