Through role-playing, students reenact six famous treason trials from European history, those of Colonel Daniel Axtell (English Civil War), Louis Capet (Louis XVI), Olympe de Gouge (Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen), Alfred Dreyfus, Roger Casement (Irish history/WWI), and Robert Brasillach (Vichy supporter during WWII).
Whether used as lead-ins to upcoming lessons or as wrap-up activities, the mock trials encourage students to think on their feet, question their own responses to historical situations, and consider new ways of thinking. Instructions show how to perform the trials either using a provided script, or improvised. Each lesson includes a background essay, a roles chart, a script, documentary evidence, discussion questions, extension activities, and sources.
