YOU BE THE REPORTER
A Video Writing Workshop
DVD, guide
Used in conjunction with 17 reproducible activity sheets, this program directs students step by step through the essentials of journalistic newswriting. First students are coached about basic techniques including the five Ws and H (who? what? when? where? why? how?) and the pyramid writing style. Next they are shown newsclips of actual events: the eruption of Mount St. Helens, a daring robbery, and a wild horse roundup. From these clippings students gather facts, make notes, compose the lead, and write their stories. The DVD is stopped from time to time, allowing students to compare their writing with the sample suggested by the video. Grades 6 and up. Color. 53 minutes. Educational Activities.
