Twelve lessons proceed step by step through the novel and require students to research historical figures and events such as the Harlem riots in 1943. Students also discuss stereotyping, symbolism, the Homeric pattern, self-discovery, and postmodern writing. An emphasis is placed on discovery methods and analytical approaches.
