This unit presents a key episode in the history of European exploration as a narrative that students help create.
With half the class portraying the Taino and the other half Columbus and his crew, students first create a frieze or mural of the island and build a model of the explorers’ ship. They then each create an adult character, using information from the unit and their own research. The unit concludes with the two classroom groups participating in an "encounter" that requires decision making and drives home the complexities of cultural interaction. Includes tips for using the unit with ELL students.
