Blend world history content with basic-to-moderate language skills through activities that engage students who only have limited knowledge of both.
For example, in the activity on feudal Japan students create social media profiles for and messages from samurais, while the lesson on the Enlightenment has students draft a five-sentence letter in the present tense to the king using proper spelling, grammar, and format for a modern business letter. Other lessons concern English skills such as subject-verb agreement, tenses, sentence construction, summarizing, etymology and dictionary use, interrogative pronouns and adverbs, and report writing. Lessons provide objectives, procedures, handouts (where applicable), and evaluations. Time required: 1–4 class periods.
